Recently, Vibrant Table was invited to take part in a tabletop shoot for Portland Bride & Groom Magazine. When deciding our direction for the spread, we decided to focus on showcasing the growing trend of brunch weddings.
We were given free rein with our color palette, and immediately decided to keep it clean and simple with white, chrome, canary and red. Our accents played off of primary and secondary colors, and we immediately found some great oilcloth, which sent us on our way! Kitsch! So fun, yet so daring – it’s so easy to go the wrong way with kitsch, so most people stay far, far away. Of course, we wanted the challenge to do it right, right, right!
The flowers were fun and informal – gerbera daisies, ixia, red zinnias, billy balls and tulips mixed together provided a lot of vibrance and texture and were balanced by chrome-glass containers. Possibly our favorite part was the great bridal bouquet made of gerbera daisies with a twist- each gerbera was embellished with ephemera from The Paper Zone, surrounded with vintage-inspired beaded leaves, and finished in the most darling red and white polka-dot ribbon. We echoed the flowers and ephemera on the completely fun and funky (and quite delicious) Rice Krispie cake and in tiny chrome votive holders. Another fun paper element came from the hanging lemon and cherry cut-outs (tied in with the fabric banner) , and yet another detail was the completely adorable place card created by our own Faith Adams, who is the talent behind CraftArt Designs.
Our tabletop went retro with the rest of the details: Fiestaware, oilcloth placemats, chrome accents, and Jadeite. The glasses and napkins (which were trimmed in vintage pom-pon rickrack) had an awesome fruit print and we found the cutest striped sugar bowl to match (thanks, Kurt!) We had fun shopping locally (hi, Porch Light, Mill End and The Whole 9 Yards!) and hit up some vintage stores, tag sales, and Anthropolgie for a vintage toaster, some of the serviceware and the chairs. The finishing touch was The New York Sunday Times crossword tucked in at the edge of the bowl of (you guessed it!) Corn Flakes. What fun!

Breakfast wedding receptions are a hot trend right now. They are intimate and relaxed, perfectly adapted to a recession’s toned down approach to the big day. Our friends Carol Hickman’s & Jim Staicoff’s brunch reception was recently featured in The Oregonian’s Bride Guide, a special print just in time for the PDX Bridal Show.
Carol selected a comforting yet refined menu showcasing Northwest flavors and vendors: scrambled eggs with wild mushrooms, spinach, leeks and feta; Carlton Farms pepper bacon; roasted red potatoes; peaches and blueberries; Stumptown coffee; Acme doughnuts; and a wedding cake by Baker & Spice. Her venue, the Northstar Ballroom, positively glowed as the morning light streamed through tall windows – as Sherri Diteman’s beautiful photos demonstrate. Goes to show that casual and familiar does not require a sacrifice of elegance.
